What each metric means
Character counts use Unicode code points. Spaces follow Unicode whitespace. Lines respect CRLF/LF/CR. Paragraphs are non-empty blocks separated by blank lines.
Unicode code points, not grapheme clusters
Emoji with skin tones or combining marks may count as multiple code points. We do not claim grapheme-cluster counting.
Multilingual word counting
Where available we use Intl.Segmenter word segments (isWordLike). Results can differ by browser and language; counting is helpful, not linguistically perfect.
UTF-8 byte length
Byte size uses the browser TextEncoder (UTF-8 only). Shift_JIS and other encodings are out of scope for this tool.
Privacy
Text stays on your device. Analytics never include text, counts, samples, or hashes.
Limits
A soft limit around one million code points keeps the UI responsive. Extremely large pastes may show a safety message.

- Is my text uploaded?
- No. Counting runs entirely in your browser.
- Why is an emoji more than one character?
- We count Unicode code points. Some emoji sequences include multiple code points.
- How are words counted in Japanese?
- Via Intl.Segmenter when the browser supports it. Treat results as approximate for CJK text.
- Does excluding spaces ignore all whitespace?
- Yes — Unicode whitespace matched by JavaScript \s (with u), consistently across locales.
- Can I count Shift_JIS bytes?
- Not in this tool. Only UTF-8 byte length is shown.
