Why reverse pricing beats simple markup

A flat markup ignores fees that grow with price. If marketplace and payment fees are percentages of selling price, you must solve for price algebraically — otherwise your realized margin undershoots the plan.

Phase A method

All rates are user-entered. No marketplace fee schedule is asserted. The engine uses an explicit reverse formula.

  • Fixed cost C = unit cost + shipping + duty + tax + packaging + fulfillment + other variable + overhead + fixed fees
  • Fee rate F = marketplace + payment + advertising + return + other % fees (as fractions)
  • Target margin mode: required price P = (C − shipping revenue) / (1 − F − M)
  • Target profit mode: P = (C − shipping revenue + target profit) / (1 − F)
  • With planned discount d: minimum list price = P / (1 − d)

How is margin different from markup?

Margin = profit ÷ price. Markup = profit ÷ cost. Example: cost 80, price 100 → margin 20%, markup 25%.
